Abstract:

Determining the origin and the cause of a bedroom fire can be difficult, since both electrical and non-electrical effects may leave similar physical evidence such as jagged or beaded ends of wires. This article describes some of the considerations in determining origin and cause of bedroom fires, with particular attention to electrically heated blankets. Illustrations are given of the appearance of the special wire used in electric blankets that have been subjected to fire, and cautions are expressed regarding possible misinterpretation of the remains.
