A Message from NAFE Executive Director Arthur Schwartz, J.D., CAE    Arthur Schwartz

What a terrific 2019 NAFE Summer Conference! Held at the Westin Denver Colorado Downtown, NAFE continues to break conference attendance records with 120 registrants – the highest ever for NAFE Summer Conference! And that was immediately following a record attendance for a NAFE Winter Conference in Orlando, Florida in January 2019! Onward and upward to the 2020 NAFE Winter Conference on January 10-12 at the San Diego Marriott La Jolla which will include a special session on Marine Investigations as well as other more general tracks to serve the broad and diverse interests of NAFE members. A very special Saturday evening dinner event is also being planned for San Diego’s historic Old Town.

The NAFE Board of Directors also met and heard from Association Management expert Mark Levin who was retained to advise the Academy on membership and related issues. Mark will present a final report to the NAFE leadership in the coming weeks. The NAFE Board of Directors continues to take important steps to both strengthen and protect the Academy’s finances and to identify ways to better serve and grow the NAFE membership. Importantly, NAFE membership continues its upward trend.

During the past months, NAFE President John Certuse and other NAFE leaders actively participated and contributed the NAFE perspective at the NCEES Participating Organizations (POLC) Meeting, the Council of Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB) Annual Meeting, the National Academy of Engineering Convocation, and the ASME Public Policy Forum. Last week, NAFE leaders participated in the NSPE Professional Engineers Conference (PECON) and will be participating in the 2019 NCEES Annual Meeting.

NAFE headquarters continues to receive a flurry of inquiries from attorneys, NAFE members and others interested in retaining the services of NAFE members for various professional assignments. I routinely post these inquiries on the NAFE List Serve so that all NAFE members have an equal opportunity to review them, decide if they would be interested in pursuing the opportunities, or recommend other qualified NAFE members for the assignments. So, if you are not on the NAFE List Serve and you are eligible, you need to be since the List Serve provides members with access to this information, share valuable professional and technical insights and pose important professional and technical practice questions. I am always very impressed how much NAFE members have been eager to share the benefit of their experience and expertise on the NAFE List Serve. NAFE headquarters continues to explore opportunities for improvements and enhancements as we seek better and more efficient ways to serve NAFE members.

I am pleased that NAFE members continued use of and access to the NAFE website, updating their personal and professional information, using the NAFE membership directory, and the NAFE document library.

Please be sure to “Save the Dates” for the following NAFE events for 2020 thru 2021:
